DASH Considering More Frequent Service to Old Town North Starting in September
DASH, Alexandria's local bus service, is planning to launch a "New DASH Network" in September 2021, with a goal of providing a more modern, useful, all-day transit network that improves overall mobility. The new frequent network introduces frequent, all-day bus service on major transit corridors across the City of Alexandria. Buses on these routes will be running every 15 minutes or less, all-day, seven days per week. Frequent, all-day service means buses arrive every 15 minutes or better from 6AM - 7PM on weekdays, and from 7AM - 6PM on weekends.
In Old Town North, a new Old Town Circulator route is planned, operating between King Street Metro and Braddock Road Metro via King Street, North Fairfax Street, and the Madison/Montgomery pair. Trips on the two new lines (30 and 31) serving the Circulator route will be coordinated so that they arrive at the King Street Metro in even intervals to create 5-15 minute headways.
A new Line 34 will partially replace the existing DASH AT2 and AT5 routes, running between Lee Center and the Braddock Road Metro via South Royal Street, City Hall, North Fairfax Street, and Slaters Lane Once the Potomac Yard Metro opens the route will connect to that station instead of Braddock Road Metro, and the bus route in Old Town North will shift from N. Fairfax Street to N. Pitt Street.
The best news is the increased frequency of service which will make riding the bus much more practical and attractive; in addition, the Circulator route provides easy no-transfer access to many of the destinations prized by Old Town North residents and employees.
DASH is accepting public comment on these proposals through April 16; on April 14, the DASH Board of Directors will hold a public hearing. For further information, go to www.dashbus.com/newnetwork.
