Updates on Montgomery Center Redevelopment Project

CarrAmerica now anticipates a late Spring start for demolition at the Montgomery Center site with an expected final building delivery date of Q3 2027.  The project will include 327 rental units (inclusive of 22 affordable units); a seventh floor pool deck with views of the river; 25,000 square feet of ground floor retail space; and a 13,000 square foot arts venue.  

CarrAmerica has recently selected a tenant for the arts venue and expects that a public announcement about the tenant for the arts venue is likely to take place within the next month. The property will also include a public art feature and CarrAmerica has retained an art consultant to activate the entire space

James Ross Announces Plans to Step Down Following the 2025/2026 Season

The upcoming 2025/2026 season will be the last for the longtime leader of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, James Ross. Upon learning of Ross’s plans to step down, the Board of Trustees “immediately and unanimously named him Music Director Laureate.”  The Board of Trustees will convene a search committee to identify a successor.

The final performance of the 2024/2025 season is coming up on April 26th and April 27th and will feature music by Rachmaninov.

Alexandria Film Festival Finds a New Permanent Home at MetroStage

MetroStage and the Alexandria Film Festival announced earlier this week that the new MetroStage Theater at Venue (915 N. Fairfax St.) will become the new permanent home of the Alexandria Film Festival starting in 2026.  The Alexandria Film Festival, a four-day event featuring a curated selection of short films of independent features from filmmakers around the world, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026.  

MetroStage calls the arrangement with the Alexandria Film Festival “a model for future complementary partnerships” and shares that additional film screenings and events hosted by the Alexandria Film Festival may be added to the MetroStage calendar.

MetroStage is hard at work on the final stages of its fundraising efforts to fund the buildout of the new 120-seat theater at Venue.

Opening Reception for “Break Water” Temporary Art Exhibition

“Break Water” is the 7th temporary art exhibition in the Site See: New Views in Old Town series. Attend the opening celebration on Saturday, March 22nd in Waterfront Park to hear opening remarks from artist Nekisha Durrett and enjoy live music and art activities with the Mobile Art Lab.

In “Break Water,” artist Nekisha Durrett pays tribute to the “creativity and enduring spirit of Alexandria’s Black community.”

“Break Water” will be on exhibit from March 22nd through November of this year.  This temporary art exhibition will be a new addition to the 2025 Old Town North Alliance Art & Culture Walk brochure, to be released this spring.
